Our vision

Software that answers to you.

The reason Owl exists is a reaction to what has been happening to the software we all rely on. Four trends, each bad on its own, each worse together.

01

Subscription creep

Every productivity tool has a monthly price that has gone up since last year. A feature you were promised two years ago still has not shipped. The tier above the one you use has half the features locked behind it. You pay more every year, for less every year, and you pay forever.

02

Platform risk

Services get sold, pivoted or shut down. Laws pass in one country that cut off access in another — age-verification requirements, data-locality rules, and platform-liability frameworks push providers to close borders or close doors. If your work lives inside a service, your work lives at the mercy of that service.

03

The balkanized web

What used to be an open network is fragmenting into walled gardens. Each wants your login, your phone number, your government ID, and your attention. Moving your work between them is hostile by design. The network effects that built these services now work to keep you inside them.

04

Data mining as the default

Every cloud service mines what passes through it — ad targeting, training data, analytics, and whatever the next business model turns out to be. The default cost of using a service is that it studies you. Free services and paid ones both.

Owl is built for none of that.

Your data lives on your hard drive, in plain files you can read without the app. Edits sync peer-to-peer when you pair devices — no server is involved. AI is off by default and, when you turn it on, can run entirely on your machine.

There is nothing to log in to and no server to depend on. Without a cloud service, no data mining.

Owl is a tool that outlasts its pricing page.
